Honduras: El Corridor – A School for the Children

El CORRIDOR is a tiny village in Honduras with only 110 inhabitants.

There is currently no school. So far, a private individual has made her living room and garden available to 9 girls and 7 boys so they can attend regular lessons, with one group in the morning and the other in the afternoon, and on nice days, classes are held in the garden.

In the near future, there will be more children who need schooling, and we have planned a school with two classrooms, each 25 square meters in size.

One classroom will be used for lessons, while the second can serve as a library where the other group of children can do homework or study while waiting for their lesson.

Two toilets are also planned, which are hardly even present in the private huts.

The village carpenter, along with a few helpers, will build tables and chairs, as he has done in two other villages.

If the good weather lasts for a while longer and no unforeseen problems arise, we hope to complete the construction within two months.

This time, we want to extend a very special thank you to Mr. Thomas Brackmann; without his generous donation, this project would not have been possible!

Unfortunately, our “Village School” project was initially delayed considerably due to the unstable political situation.

In mid-March, we were finally able to start construction. First, the building site had to be leveled and cleared of roots and stones. It wasn’t always easy to obtain the necessary building materials.

After several months of hard work, the new school was finally handed over to the villagers, and most importantly, to the children—it was a great joy! New school desks and chairs were made, and a school library was set up. The students received notebooks and pencils, and books were purchased for the library, which is available to all members of the community. Thus, the entire village benefits from this project. We were able to provide income for some craftsmen, such as carpenters, for a few months. The school’s assembly hall may also be used for social events by the village community.

We would once again like to extend our heartfelt thanks to Thomas Brackmann, whose generous donation made the construction of this school possible, enabling children to attend school regularly and gain access to education.
