Mongolei: Sarnai

A little outside the center of Ulaanbaatar, in the yurt area and right next to the city’s garbage dumps, lives a young woman named SARNAI.

She has made it her mission to help small children who suffer the same fate she did at the age of 14: providing them with a warm shelter and daily food.

It is very common here for poor families with serious problems to be unable to raise their children, often abandoning them on this garbage heap. Over the years, SARNAI has taken in various children, lovingly offering them a warm home, food, and clothing. To maintain this ability, she has opened a small business where she repairs or makes clothing for others, or, when the opportunity arises, helps with household work for other families.

We had the chance to bring her children’s clothing and shoes, which she urgently needs for the soon-to-start harsh winter. At the moment, SARNAI’s large family is home to 20 children, ranging in age from 9 months to 12 years. The greatest joy of these children, when we met them, was a bag full of balloons. SARNAI has an immeasurably big heart full of love and eyes that see the suffering of others!
