Gyan Jyoti Primary School, located in Lubhoo Village in the Lalitpur District, is a very small school with just one administration room and a single classroom that also serves as a dining area. Despite its size, this school is incredibly important. It serves thirty-three students, ranging in age from 9 to 31, all of whom live with disabilities.
Human Rights Watch has highlighted the ongoing marginalization and discrimination faced by people with disabilities in Nepal. Access to education remains particularly challenging for these children. As a result, many parents, lacking appropriate educational or care facilities, feel they have no choice but to confine their disabled children at home or even restrain them.
The school plays a vital role in providing humane care and education to its students. Due to the building’s poor condition, Happy Bambini e.V. recently replaced a dangerously unstable wall and installed new carpeting to help compensate for the lack of heating in the rooms. These much-needed renovations have already significantly improved the environment.
However, a long-term solution is necessary: the school needs to relocate closer to the children’s villages. The current distance makes it difficult for parents to bring their children to school, as many cannot find the time to make the long journey. To address this, plans are underway to purchase land for a new facility. The parents have already submitted an application to acquire a suitable plot and are raising funds during the puja, a religious celebration. Unfortunately, the donations collected so far are insufficient.
We kindly ask for your support for this crucial project. Every cent counts toward starting construction by the beginning of October—before the onset of winter.
In the accompanying pictures, you can see the classroom where the children are currently taught singing and dancing. Ensuring that every child actively participates in these activities is a top priority.
